Game Informer Closes After 33 Years
GameStop has closed the US publication Game Informer after 367 issues. All content from the online site is also no longer available.
US publication Game Informer is closing down after 33 years and 367 issues. This affects not only the print edition, but also the online magazine. All news, articles, reviews and the like are no longer available online.
The first issue was published in August 1991, when it was still published by the retailer Funcoland. In 2000, the magazine was bought by the retailer GameStop and was then largely available only through a subscription from GameStop, which was relaxed in 2024. The magazine had its largest circulation in 2011 with a circulation of over eight million (3rd most read magazine in the US). As a result of GameStop's financial difficulties, jobs have already been cut at the end of 2019 and 2022. Now the final end has come, with Alex Van Aken (former Video Lead Game Informer) and Ben Hanson (former Video Producer Game Informer) sharply criticising the way the magazine has been shut down.
The end of Game Informer was announced in the following way: "After 33 thrilling years of bringing you the latest news, reviews, and insights from the ever-evolving world of gaming, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Game Informer. From the early days of pixelated adventures to today's immersive virtual realms, we've been honored to share this incredible journey with you, our loyal readers. While our presses may stop, the passion for gaming that we've cultivated together will continue to live on. Thank you for being part of our epic quest, and may your own gaming adventures never end."
