On 24 January 2024, Keen Games released the survival action RPG Enshrouded into Early Access. Although the similarly genre-based Palworld had attracted a lot of attention a few days earlier, the game from the creators of Portal Knights reached more than two million players in just under a month. Newzoo's market researchers take a look at how the game has performed on the market since then.

"When Enshrouded first opened its early access doors in January, it was in the top 100 of all PC games across 37 markets. If you zoom into the Adventure genre, the game ranked #17, right between ARK: Survival Evolved and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales," wrote Jose Rodrigues, Commercial Director at Newzoo. Since then, the number of monthly active users (MAUs) has been declining month by month, partly due to the fact that content is still limited and the game is constantly being expanded. Newzoo: "In May, Enshrouded ranked #71 by MAU in the adventure genre among PC titles and #28 among Open World Survival Craft games. It was in the top 30 adventure games by average daily playtime, with explorers spending an average of 2.65 hours building castles and trying to survive the open-world wilderness." The Melodies of the Mire update, released in June 2024, saw the number of players (CCU peak) rise to 16,124, up from a CCU peak of 7,652 two weeks earlier.

"In January 2024, Enshrouded was the 11th-highest revenue generator among PC games across six markets (France, Italy, Germany, Spain, the US, and the UK). It had the fourth-highest premium revenue that month, behind Baldur's Gate III," states Rodrigues. This revenue ranking dropped to 72nd place in May. The game's top markets are the US and Germany, both in terms of monthly active players and revenue. According to Newzoo, Enshrouded generated similar sales to Hitman World of Assassination, Raft and Sons of the Forest among all PC games. It should be noted, however, that Enshrouded is still in Early Access and there is likely to be a lot going on before full release, especially as the game is also due to be released on consoles.

Comparisons within the genre with other titles are also interesting. 42 per cent of those paying for Valheim also bought Enshrouded between January and the end of May, while 42.5 per cent of those paying for Enshrouded spent money on Palworld. "Over a third of players who dove into Palworld but not Enshrouded in January opted to play the latter between February and May. And just over 5% of Valheim players who met those parameters also decided to explore the Shroud," says Jose Rodrigues. Nearly 60 per cent of Nightingale players, Inflexion Games' Victorian survival game that launched in February 2024, spent money on Enshrouded - the highest of any overlap target. 37.4 per cent of Enshrouded players also spent money on Baldur's Gate III. Players, that stopped playing Enshrouded between January and May 2024, played Helldivers 2 (36,2 per cent), Granblue Fantasy: Relink (18 per cent) and Last Epoch (16,9 per cent).

Newzoo: "Player acquisition and payer overlap data shows that many Enshrouded players also gravitated toward fantasy games, RPGs, and titles like Helldivers 2 and Counter-Strike 2 & GO, which have retained universal popularity and, therefore, tend to scoop up players across genres. (...) Given the game’s consistent stickiness since February and its overall performance so far, there’s every reason to believe that a sizable cohort of players will pick up the full version of Enshrouded later in the year."
