The afro-futurist traversal action game by Aerial_Knight and BetaJester is one of HeadUp’s publishing projects. It impresses with BIPOC actors and artists as voices and composers and a fresh story. Now, the game is also available on PS5.

Since May 2024, there is a new, old independent indie publisher on the market. HeadUp Games, the German publisher and developer from Düren, had divested from former parent Thunderful Games and become its own independent entity again. Not only that, at the end of August, HeadUp even spun off their own separate indie development studio, Goon Squad, from an internal team to a daughter company. Between those dates, HeadUp had still been busy publishing indie games. One of them is Aerial_Knight's We Never Yield by Aerial_Knight and BetaJester, the sequel to 2021’s Aerial_Knight's Never Yield, also published by HeadUp then. We Never Yield released mid-July for PC. Now the game has also been published on PlayStation 5, bringing the afro-futurist runner game to all consoles that the predecessor was on – bar the Nintendo Switch, which is potentially missing the necessary hardware power.

We Never Yield combines parcouring and fighting in a swift, action-packed setting. The biggest improvement over the predecessor is probably the coop mode, making it possible to play the whole game with a friend. The game lives from its combination of highscore-hunting in the addictive gameplay loop and the mostly untreaded setting. The latter is strongly enhanced by the voice acting talent, featuring BIPOC actors and artists, including Blessing Adeoye Jr., Belsheber Rusape Jr., and Black Krystel. The soundtracks fits the bill as well, being composed by Detroit artist Danime-Sama and solo developer Aerial_Knight.

Conclusion

A stylish, fresh indie game full of talent and heart.

Features:
  • BIPOC artists and actors
  • Fresh setting
  • Parcouring action
