[Frank Weber's](/person/frank-weber) move was not officially announced, but it is visible on social media. Weber brings many years of games industry experience to the organization, which is headed by former ESL founder [Ralf Reichert](/person/ralf-reichert_b) and is responsible for organising the Esports World Cup, which [took place 2024](https://www.gamesmarkt.de/business/event-esports-world-cup-attracts-more-than-500-million-viewers-and-over-2-million-visitors-72241feb7fa45fa062b88940b6d63a0d) for the first time.

Weber's position as "Director Corporate Marketing & Olympics" raises the question of how the World Esports Cup and the IOC's Olympic Esports Games will be related to each other. Both events are known to take place in Saudi Arabia. The IOC has also signed a [long-term contract](https://www.gamesmarkt.de/business/confirmed-olympic-esport-games-shall-debut-in-saudi-arabia-in-2025-0d1d768ade942a3101f59d1cf0d6f13d) with the Saudi NOC. However, it was and is unclear exactly how the Olympic Esports Games will be organized. The Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) is formally an independent non-profit organization, but it is also largely supported and backed by Saudi Arabia and is based in Riyadh. The Esports World Cup is [organized in the long term](https://www.gamesmarkt.de/business/esports-esl-faceit-group-signs-multi-year-partnership-with-esports-world-cup-b301c07945d4994a268e4806923c2cf4) by Reichart's former company ESL Faceit, which belongs to the Savvy Games Group. 

With Frank Weber, the EWCF is bringing an experienced games manager into the organisation. Weber most recently worked for [Plaion](/company/plaion), where he helped the company through a massive restructuring that also saw jobs cut in Germany. Plaion is part of the Embracer Group, in which the Savvy Games Group, which in turn belongs to the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF), holds a significant stake. Prior to his time at Plaion, Weber worked for Activision Blizzard and its predecessor Vivendi Universal Games for many years.
