This console generation sees another iterative hardware upgrade with more graphics power. Sony Interactive Entertainment will release the more powerful PlayStation 5 Pro later this year for 800 Euros without a disc drive. Everything about the new console at a glance.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced the PlayStation 5 Pro during a technical presentation by Mark Cerny, Lead Architect of the PlayStation 5 console. The iterative update to the current generation of consoles is scheduled for release on 7 November 2025. The price will be 799.99 Euros. It will include a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller and a copy of Astro's Playroom pre-installed. The PS5 Pro is available as a discless console only, with the option to purchase the currently available disc drive for PS5 separately. Available at participating retailers and directly from PlayStation at direct.playstation.com. Pre-orders begin on 26 September 2024.

With three-quarters of gamers preferring performance mode (60fps) to fidelity mode (higher resolution and more detail; typically 30fps), Cerny says the new console's performance has been optimised in three areas. An enlarged GPU (67% more Compute Units) is said to offer 45% faster rendering, and the improved RT array is said to deliver two to three times faster ray tracing - both compared to the PlayStation 5. Then there's PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), an AI-powered upscaling system that, like Nvidia's DLSS, relies on AI. In the presentation, Mark Cerny said that the PlayStation 5 Pro could deliver a fidelity experience at 60fps and that some games would run twice as fast.

Hideaki Nishino, CEO, Platform Business Group, Sony Interactive Entertainment:: "Other enhancements include PS5 Pro Game Boost, which can apply to more than 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games playable on PS5 Pro. This feature may stabilize or improve the performance of supported PS4 and PS5 games. Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games is also available to improve the resolution on select PS4 games. PS5 Pro will also launch with the latest wireless technology, Wi-Fi 7, in territories supporting this standard. VRR and 8K gaming are also supported."

Some games will receive free software updates to take advantage of PS5 Pro features, these games can be identified by a PS5 Pro Enhanced label. These games are Alan Wake 2, Assassin's Creed: Shadows, Demon's Souls, Dragon's Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, The Last of Us Part II Remastered and more.

In line with the PlayStation 5 Pro announcement, Mat Piscatella of Circana has revealed that PlayStation 4 Pro accounts for almost 13 per cent of total PlayStation 4 console sales in the US. "Total PS4 unit volume trend did not change significantly when PS4 Pro released, but average price went up. Succeeded at driving incremental sales to the super enthusiast (not mass) base," he worte at Bluesky. The market researchers expect that this will be a similar trend for a PS5 Pro, but of course the price will be a factor.

When the PlayStation 4 was launched in 2013, its recommended retail price was 399.99 Euros. The PlayStation 4 Pro, launched three years later, was also priced at 399.99 Euros. The PlayStation 5 was released in Europe on 19 November 2020 at a price of 499.99 Euros for the Standard Version. The Digital Edition, which does not have a disc drive, cost 399.99 Euros.
