At the end of August, Finnish Game Jam and the European Space Agency are hosting the first Spaceship Game Jam. Developers outside Finland are invited to participate digitally.

Game development is not rocket science, but the passion with which people work in both worlds certainly has parallels. Perhaps this is why the European Space Agency has turned its attention to the gaming industry in order to find potential employees. In any case, it has been seeking closer ties with the industry for several years. The video message from ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti from the ISS, which was shown at gamescom ONL in 2022, was unforgettable. Now ESA is launching a new project in collaboration with Finnish Game Jam (FGJ).

From 29 to 31 August, the two partners are organising the first Spaceship Game Jam. The aim is to create games or playable concepts inspired by real-world space themes identified by the ESA. Due to the partnership, the Spaceship Game Jam is primarily of interest to Finnish developers, as only locations in Finland can register on site. However, online participation by developers from all over the world is explicitly possible and also encouraged.

"This year marks the 50th anniversary of The European Space Agency, and encourages us to ask what we want to see happen in the next 50 years. Along with such goals as sustainability and supporting European STEM education, ESA is committed to fostering innovation and engagement with the broader community, including the vibrant world of game development", said Noora Archer, who works with VR development and space exploration preparation at ESA. "Spaceship Game Jam exemplifies this commitment by creating an inclusive, creative opportunity for fresh perspectives and bold ideas to come alive and flourish."

All information is available on the Spaceship Game Jam website.
