Games Benefit from Successful Film and Series Adaptations
A survey by YouGov, commissioned by game, highlights the growing influence of computer and video games on the film and television world. This trend is proving highly lucrative for games companies, not just as licensors.
The survey, conducted in July 2024, revealed that 43 per cent of Germans aged 16 and older have watched a film or series based on a video game. This figure rises to an impressive 61 per cent among the 35-44 age group. game - the German Games Industry Association interprets this as a sign of how deeply games, as a pop-cultural phenomenon, are influencing other entertainment sectors.
Looking to the future, the trend is expected to accelerate. According to the survey, 62 per cent of Germans over 16 anticipate that games will become even more significant in the film and TV industries.
Felix Falk, managing director of game, comments: "Games tell the epic stories of our time and have the largest and most passionate community in the world. That's why more and more film productions are drawing inspiration from the gaming world. The fact that the importance of games in film and television will continue to grow is demonstrated by the enthusiastic audiences of millions, which extends far beyond the actual games community. We see an exciting effect here: successful film adaptations often also boost interest in the games themselves. Some games experience a real comeback as a result, while others gain entirely new fans."
A striking example of this effect is Amazon's adaptation of the Fallout series. Despite the last game in the franchise being released in 2018, the show's launch spurred renewed interest, driving sales of older titles.Other succe ssful adaptations include “Tomb Raider,” “Super Mario,” “Pikachu” (Pokémon), “The Last of Us,” “The Witcher,” and “Sonic.” While many have been commercially successful, not all adaptations have lived up to Hollywood's expectations.
