At the Indie Game Awards, Cologne-based studio Slow Bros. took home the award in the Visual Design category. The big winner of the evening, however, was Canadian solo developer Local Thunk with Balatro.

The decisions are in: during a streamed event on the night of December 19/20 (CET), the Indie Game Awards were presented. Of the three German teams among the nominees, only Slow Bros. emerged victorious, with their game Harold Halibut earning the award for Visual Design.

In the Innovation category, Sven Ahlgrimm, Mathilde Hoffmann, and Bastian Clausdorff's Oddada was edged out by Akupara Games’ Cryptmaster. Meanwhile, Happy Brokkoli Games’ Duck Detective: The Secret Salami narrowly lost in the Bite-Sized Game category to Thank Goodness You’re Here by Coal Supper/Panic Inc. However, “lost” might be too strong a word—after all, being nominated for the Indie Game Awards is already a win in itself.

The standout winners of the evening were Local Thunk, a solo developer from Canada, and the Seattle-based studio Aggro Crab. Local Thunk claimed both the Gameplay Design and Game of the Year awards for Balatro. Aggro Crab won the award for Best Community Management and also triumphed in the Accessibility category with Another Crab’s Treasure.
