New Project Supports Teachers in NRW in Using Games in the Classroom
In mid-July, an initial online information event will take place on a new project being implemented by the Stiftung Digitale Spielekultur in collaboration with partners and with funding from the Ministry of Education in North Rhine-Westphalia. The event will focus on the use of games in the classroom.
The online event for the new project, entitled "Schule mit Games gestalten – Demokratie und Teilhabe spielend fördern" (Shaping schools with games – promoting democracy and participation through play), will take place on 10 July, before the start of the summer holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia. This is the kick-off event, where teachers can find out about the content of the project.
The project itself consists of five independent workshops in September and October, where suitable games and related materials will be presented that can be used to design lessons on the topics of inclusion, democracy and remembrance culture. Starting at the end of October, project days will take place at selected schools.
The project is being implemented by the Stiftung Digitale Spielekultur (Digital Game Culture Foundation) in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Jan M. Boelmann and Dr. Lisa König from the Centre for Didactic Computer Game Research, the Centre for Youth Media Culture NRW and Medienberatung NRW. It is also funded by the Ministry of Schools and Education of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
"Digital games are an integral part of young people's lives. This makes it all the more important to harness their educational potential for school learning, " says Dorothee Feller, Minister for Schools and Education of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. And Nandita Wegehaupt, Managing Director of the Siftung Digitale Spielekultur, adds: "With “Schule mit Games gestalten NRW”, we want to support teachers in teaching democracy and participation in an accessible and tangible way in everyday school life. Together with our experienced partners, we are therefore putting together a package of practical workshops, game recommendations and teaching materials for all interested teachers, which will ideally be used directly in the new school year.
