Amazon Ends Appstore on Android and Amazon Coins in August
In a message to developers and on its own platforms, Amazon has unexpectedly announced that the Amazon Appstore on Android will be discontinued as of 20 August 2025. However, the Appstore will remain available on other platforms, such as Fire TV and Fire Tablet.
The fact that Amazon's app store will continue to operate on other platforms, including its own devices like Fire TV and Fire Tablet, raises questions. Many had expected a boom in alternative app stores due to political pressure on Google and Apple in the EU—rather than the withdrawal of a relatively successful competitor. This suggests Amazon may simply be repositioning its app store strategy, though that remains speculation.
What is certain is that Amazon is notifying developers in writing and informing consumers via a public Q&A that, as of 20 August 2025, access to the Amazon Appstore on Android devices will be completely removed. At the same time, the Amazon Coins programme will also be discontinued, with new coins no longer available for purchase since 20 February.
The Q&A also clarifies that there is no guarantee that apps downloaded from the Amazon Appstore will continue to function on Android devices. Customers can redeem any existing Coins until 20 August, after which unused Coins will be refunded—with further details on the refund process to be provided later.
The shutdown was announced exactly six months before it took place. The fact that it took place on the same day as the start of gamescom in Cologne is likely to have been a mere coincidence.
