Im Vorfeld der CES hat Microsoft-Gründer Bill Gates einen Ausbau der Xbox zu einer vollwertigen Settop-Box angekündigt.

In einem Interview bestätigte Microsoft-Gründer Bill Gates, das Unternehmen plane, die Xbox zu einer TV-Settop-Box auszubauen. "Die Nutzer werden überrascht sein, was ihre Xbox alles leisten kann", sagte Gates.

Die neue Software soll im Groben dem bekannten Windows Media Player entsprechen und die Wiedergabe verschiedener Medien ermöglichen. Genauere Details, welche Dienste der Softwareriese anbieten will, wurden nicht bekannt. Durch die eingebaute Festplatte und den vorhandenen Breitbandanschluss ist aber z.B. Video on Demand oder ein Musikangebot ähnlich dem Apple iTunes Music Store denkbar.
