Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the second best-selling Nintendo Switch game, with 48.19 million units sold. It is behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which has sold 68.86 million units, but ahead of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which has sold 36.55 million units. Nintendo has now announced a Switch 2 edition of the game, due to be released on 15 January 2026. Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will cost €64.99, while owners of the original Switch game can purchase an upgrade for €4.99.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition offers an enhanced 4K resolution; however, the frame rate is limited to 30 fps for 4K output. The right Joy-Con controller can be used as a mouse for decorating interiors, creating custom designs, and writing handwritten messages on the bulletin board. The new megaphone item uses the console's built-in microphone and can be used to call in residents. Up to 12 players can play together online with the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Up to eight players can play together in wireless local mode. GameChat and CameraPlay are also supported.

In addition, a free update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be released for the Nintendo Switch on the same day. This update will include a hotel run by Kapp'n's family, new furnishings and characters, and players with a Nintendo Switch Online membership (Slumber Island) can design and save up to three islands and play with friends online.
