To celebrate the 45th anniversary of the release of the original home video game console, Intellivision, Atari has announced the Intellivision Sprint, a new gaming console. Featuring 45 games and a host of technical upgrades, the Intellivision Sprint will be available to pre-order from today for €119.99, with delivery scheduled for 23rd Dezember in Europe. It will launch on 5 December in the USA and Australia.
The Intellivision, released in 1980, was a direct competitor to the Atari 2600. It offered contemporary players more realistic sports games, richer graphics, and unique controllers.
Created in collaboration with Plaion Replai, Plaion's retro label dedicated to producing, publishing and distributing retro gaming hardware and software, the Intellivision Sprint features an authentic design with the original gold and black colour scheme and wood-grain front. Technical upgrades include two wireless controllers, an HDMI output and a USB-A port for game library expansion. The 45 built-in games include sports games such as Baseball, Chip Shot Super Pro Golf, Soccer, Super Pro Skiing, Tennis and Super Pro Football, as well as strategy games such as B-17 Bomber, Sea Battle, Space Battle and Utopia, as well as arcade games include Astrosmash, Shark! Shark!, Star Strike, Thin Ice and Boulder Dash.
Matt Burnett, VP of Strategic Operations at Atari: "We're thrilled to celebrate Intellivision's 45th anniversary, and what better way to honour it than by bringing back this innovative console for fans to experience once again? Becoming caretakers of such an important brand is both a big responsibility and a very fun expansion of our work at Atari."
Ben Jones, Commercial Director of Plaion Replai: "It has been rewarding to apply some of the learnings from our successful collaboration on the Atari+ retro consoles to the Intellivison Sprint. We're proud to bring a modern take on this ground-breaking console to Intellivision fans and collectors."
In 2024, Atari launched an initiative to build on the Intellivision legacy by acquiring the Intellivision brand and most of the game catalogue.
