SC Paderborn Wins Virtual Bundesliga Team Competition
SC Paderborn are German champions for the first time. The second division club's e-sports team beat RB Leipzig, the winners of the last two years, in the final. The players' final will take place at the end of April.
It's a minor sensation: SC Paderborn have won this year's Virtual Bundesliga (VBL) season. Jonas 'Jonny' Wirth and Jamie 'Chaser' Bartel beat RB Leipzig, the champions of the last two years, in the final. SC Paderborn had previously beaten Hansa Rostock and Werder Bremen in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.
SC Paderborn is only the fourth team to win the VBL Club Championship. Although the VBL has been in existence since the 2012/2013 season, in its early years it was only a competition for the best players. The team ranking in the form of a club championship has only existed since the 2018/2019 season. Since then, Werder Bremen and RB Leipzig have each won twice, while 1. FC Heidenheim has won once.
The finals of the German individual championship will take place from 19 to 21 April at the Strassenkicker Base in Cologne, where the team finals have already been held.
