Released in August 2022, Cult of the Lamb is the most successful game ever from US publisher Devolver Digital. By October 2024, sales of the game had exceeded 4.5 million copies and, at the investor presentation reviewing 2024, lifetime revenue had topped $90 million. This makes it the publisher's most successful IP, ahead of Astroneer ($80 million), Stronghold ($50 million across nine titles), Serious Sam ($45 million across 11 titles) and Gungeon ($40 million across two titles). Notably, Cult of the Lamb also leads in terms of concurrent players on Steam with 61,780, ahead of Loop Hero (51,156), Ball X Pit (35,402), and Quarantine Zone: The Last Check (31,653). It's therefore no surprise that the game, which has only had four minor DLCs featuring new follower forms, outfits, and decorations, is now receiving a substantial expansion, despite the fact that the base game was released over three and a half years ago.
Cult of the Lamb: Woolhaven is this major expansion for Cult of the Lamb. Players must have defeated all the Bishops to access the Woolhaven content, but they do not need to have defeated the final boss. A Yngya statue will then appear on the north side of the base, near the teleporter. It will request some basic resources. Players can then head to the new Nordic region, home to nearly extinct lambs (the history of Lambkind) and the forgotten god Yngya. Theme-wise, Woolhaven is all about winter, and it expands the endgame with many new systems and content. It is a substantial endgame chapter, rather than a minor side activity.

In the new winter region, players must protect their followers from cold, snowstorms, and frostbite, in addition to hunger and faith. They should also consider stockpiling resources. Fortunately, there are new items and buildings that provide warmth, such as heaters and hot tubs. As they rebuild a new town, players unlock additional content, mini-games, shops, and so on. This is similar to the main game, but with a clear new progression arc. Another new feature is ranching. Players can breed animals that provide wool and other resources, and which can sometimes serve as mounts or a source of food in an emergency. There is also the Work Tent that reduce micromanagement. Alongside the main storyline, Woolhaven features new quests and mini-games, as well as an expanded follower trait system with an exorcism altar for rerolling traits. Not to mention new follower forms, decorations, outfits, and other cosmetic content.
Of course, there is plenty of opportunity for combat. There are two large, new dungeons (Ewefall and the Rot) with new enemies and bosses, set in wintry environments that make use of frost and weather mechanics. Overall, they are more challenging than the dungeons in the main game, but not too hard. There are also legendary weapons, new curses, tarot and relics, and additional challenges that extend the endgame. Unfortunately, however, the game still does not offer an online co-op mode. Co-op mode is only available locally (except on Steam with Remote Play Together).

Like the main game, Cult of the Lamb: Woolhaven was developed by Massive Monster in Australia. The studio was established in January 2016 by former members of the Flash games industry who had worked independently on over fifty games. Since then, they have shifted their focus to other platforms, concentrating on console and desktop games. The studio has 18 employees. Cult of the Lamb is their fourth game, following The Adventure Pals (2018), Unicycle Giraffe (2019), and Never Give Up (2019). In late 2025, the Melbourne-based studio announced the launch of MASS, a new co-working space in Collingwood, Victoria.
The game's publisher is Devolver Digital, an American company that specialises in indie video games and embraces unconventional game concepts and unusual marketing campaigns. Also due for release this year are the maze-building roguelite game Minos by Artificer, the boomer shooter Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 by Auroch Digital, and the narrative exploration game Virtue and a Sledgehammer by Deconstructeam and Selkie Harbour. Devolver Digital recently released Quarantine Zone: The Last Check, which sold over 500,000 copies in a week.
Woolhaven adds more story, more dungeons and additional systems that integrate seamlessly with Cult of the Lamb, without altering its fundamental concept. This is what a strong expansion should look like!
