Roblox has launched Regional Pricing, the latest tool aimed at reinforcing its position as a truly global gaming platform. Yet while this may offer clear advantages, it could also open the door to new challenges.

It’s no secret that purchasing power varies significantly between countries, making pricing a complex issue for global companies. With its new feature, Roblox now allows content creators to set different prices for in-experience items based on a user’s region. This means virtual goods can be priced differently depending on the buyer’s location.

According to Roblox, initial trials have shown promising results, with creators seeing a rise in player conversions in certain regions. In one such test, 17% more users in Mexico, 26% more in Brazil, and 52% more in the Philippines converted into paying customers. However, these results are case-specific and vary considerably depending on the pricing model and the items offered.

While regionally adjusted pricing is nothing new in the games industry, it can lead to unintended consequences. Grey market issues such as key reselling or the use of falsified location data to exploit lower prices are common. At present, it remains unclear whether Roblox has implemented any safeguards to address these risks.
