Dinolords from Northplay and Ghost Ship Publishing is an RTS and action RPG that blends medieval and Jurassic elements. It will not only feature a single-player mode, but also a multiplayer component with both co-operative and competitive options.
Although Dinolords was announced as far back as October 2023, the Hack'N'Strat game from Northplay and Ghost Ship Publishing has evolved significantly since then – not just visually, but in many other ways too. What initially looked like a blend of Age of Empires set in the Middle Ages with dinosaurs as its unique selling point, has come a long way. It now combines action RPG gameplay with real-time strategy: players can control their hero's attack skills directly on the map, just like in a hack-and-slash game, to take down enemies while resources are gathered at the base, including with the help of dinosaurs, and troops are recruited.
Players can choose their own path, whether they prefer to lead armies on the front lines, manage the economy, or focus on powerful abilities and battlefield impact. This won't just be possible in single-player mode, but in multiplayer too. Up to eight players can build their stronghold, battle opposing battalions, and enlist the help of dinosaurs, either cooperating or competing against one another. The first free playable multiplayer demo on Steam is set to be released on 19 October.
"Having a multiplayer mode is something I've envisaged for Dinolords since the very beginning," says Michael Flarup, CEO of Northplay. "Now that we have that solid foundation of gameplay, we can finally bring multiple players into the experience, creating a blend of RTS and RPG genres that has never been seen before. We can’t wait for people to jump in and build their very own domain, naturally with the help of their faithful dinosaur companions."
So, how does it all work? In classic RTS style, players first build a base and start gathering resources from the surrounding area. They can also deploy dinosaurs to assist with production. Next, they recruit units in the corresponding buildings and explore the map with their hero and/or troops. Units can also be taken directly into the hero’s entourage, making management much easier. The aim on the map is then to secure strategic positions; for example, to obtain dinosaur eggs, which are a rare resource, although these locations are often guarded. While exploring, the base continues to produce resources and create units in the background. There is also a handy 'eagle-eye' function that allows you to switch between views. While the controls and features are fundamentally based on the RTS standard, players first need to familiarise themselves with the action-RPG-style controls for the hero, which use the left and right mouse buttons to activate the hero's abilities.
