Nach ersten vorläufigen Ergebnissen des Statistischen Bundesamtes setzte der deutsche Einzelhandel im Oktober 1998 nominal 2,1 Prozent und real 2,0 Prozent weniger um als im Oktober 1997. Die Zahlen für die ersten zehn Monate des laufenden Jahres lassen jedoch ein wenig Hoffnung aufkommen: Von Januar bis Oktober 1998 war der Einzelhandelsumsatz nominal um 0,3 Prozent und real um 0,1 Prozent höher als im vergleichbaren Vorjahreszeitraum.
