Set in a dark, apocalyptic, occult version of the 19th-century American Wild West, Guns of Eschaton is a first-person souls-like shooter in which historical Western myths merge with supernatural horror and monsters. This project by developer Eschatology Entertainment and publisher 4Divinity is based largely on the creative vision and concept by Viktor Antonov, who passed away in February 2025. He was the former Art Director of Half-Life 2, Visual Design Director of Dishonored, and Additional Art Director of Wolfenstein: The New Order.

However, it is not just the art style that sets Guns of Eschaton apart; the gameplay is unique too, blending familiar first-person shooter action with souls-like mechanics. Rather than frantic shoot-outs, the game focuses on slow, methodical combat. Every bullet counts, and reckless action quickly leads to virtual death. Precise timing, dodging and calculated parries are vital for survival, especially as enemies and their behaviour must be studied. A hand-drawn Cherokee Codex helps players study enemy behaviour, weak points, anatomy, rituals and hidden rules. "Lore is not just decoration; lore is your weapon," say the developers.

Alongside more than 20 traditional firearms, each with their own handling characteristics, magical and supernatural powers also come into play. An in-depth progression system allows players to combine active and passive abilities, custom bullets, talismans, armour, consumables and the powers of three sacramental paths to create their own playstyle. The adventure can be played entirely in single-player mode or cooperatively with full co-op progression, and there is an option to step into PvP mode and become a threat to others.

Conclusion

Guns of Eschaton offers an intense experience, combining first-person shooter action with Souls-like mechanics in an awesome setting.
