One of the biggest surprises of the recent Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase was the announcement of Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, which is set to launch on 18 March 2026 for the Nintendo Switch 2, including the standalone add-on, Aiko's Choice. The Switch 2 version has been fully optimised and natively supports the console's mouse mode. This marks the definitive console edition of the stealth strategy game from the now-defunct German indie studio Mimimi Games. But how did this edition come to be? We spoke to Johannes Roth, Founder and Managing Director of Mimimi Games, about this.

GamesMarkt: Who exactly is behind the porting of the game for the Nintendo Switch 2, given that the development studio (Mimimi Games) was dissolved in August 2023?

Johannes Roth: "The Nintendo Switch 2 port was developed by Max Stegen [Radioactive Dreams], with hands-on support from Dominik Abé (Founder & Creative Director, Mimimi Games) and in close collaboration with the teams at Daedalic Entertainment. The port was commissioned by Daedalic Entertainment, with a shared focus on preserving the game's original vision and quality standards."

GamesMarkt: Who was the driving force behind the port? Was Daedalic the pioneer, or was it a joint decision?

Johannes Roth: "It was ultimately a joint decision, but Daedalic Entertainment clearly took the lead in making it possible. They initiated the opportunity and laid the groundwork to bring Shadow Tactics to Nintendo's new hardware. We've always wanted to see a Mimimi Games title on a Nintendo platform. Switch 2 finally provides the right technical foundation to do the game justice, so it felt like the perfect moment to make it happen together."

GamesMarkt: Why is the game such a good fit for Nintendo's new console? And what are the challenges involved in porting?

Johannes Roth: "Shadow Tactics is a great fit for Nintendo Switch 2 because it's built around careful tactical planning and mission-based gameplay, the kind of experience that works brilliantly in short sessions as well as longer play. For example, you can start planning a move while you're on your way home from work on the bus or train, test an idea, suspend the Switch 2 instantly when you get off at your stop, think through your approach, and later continue on your TV exactly where you left off. Being able to pick it up instantly, make a plan, try an approach, suspend the game, and jump right back in later is a natural match for how many players play the game and use their Switch."

"At the same time, Switch 2's mouse-mode support makes the controls feel closer than ever to the original PC experience, while still offering a comfortable gamepad setup."

"The main challenges were ensuring it runs smoothly and feels native on the platform, particularly the mouse-mode controls, while delivering solid performance in both handheld and TV mode. Like with all Mimimi Games titles and ports, our focus was on polish, responsiveness, and a smooth player experience."

GamesMarkt: Which new features of the Switch 2 version are you particularly proud of, and why is it the definitive console edition of the game?

Johannes Roth: "Our shared goal was to preserve the game's legacy while taking full advantage of the Switch 2 hardware. The Switch 2 version is fully optimized, with shorter loading times, 1080p at 30 FPS in handheld mode and 4K output at 30 FPS in TV mode. We're especially happy about features like mouse-mode support, which gives players the choice how they want to play the game. Also the ability to quickly put the Switch 2 console into standby and resume is great, which perfectly complements the game's quicksave-driven playstyle. In that sense, this is the definitive console edition."
