Kingdom Rush from Ironhide in Uruguay is one of the best-known and longest-running tower defense franchises. The series is now celebrating its 15th anniversary, with the release of Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis TD marking a return to its roots.
In Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis TD, players are taken back in time to the original lands of Linirea, when a young Vez'nan was still just a regular person. After the Sword of Elynie opens a time portal, players must travel through the kingdom's history to stop Vez'nan's corruption before it takes hold.
Like its predecessors, the sixth instalment in the franchise is a classic tower defense game with a brightly coloured, distinctive cartoon artstyle and pop culture references hidden throughout its levels. The campaign features 18 handcrafted stages spanning three landscapes of early Linirea, including the Citadel, the Stormcloud Depths, and the distant lands of Arcania. This time, however, the developers have really gone all out, as the level layouts are outstanding.
In each level, players must defeat waves of approaching enemies before they reach the point that needs defending. Players can build various towers at predefined locations to help them achieve this, as well as commanding heroes and casting spells, which have cooldown periods. There are a total of 15 towers and 12 heroes, each with their own specific strengths and weaknesses, as well as nine spells. All of these can be used to battle over 40 enemies from five different factions and six bosses. As in Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance TD (2024), two heroes can be deployed per mission. However, the dual-hero system does not quite fit with the theme or the game's roots. Aside from that, though, the gameplay is very conservative.
Rewards earned from completed missions can be spent between missions. In this progression system, heroes and spells have their own upgrade trees, while towers use a shared, global upgrade system that can be adjusted between stages and reset at any time. The new levelling and spell systems add more variety and strategy to the game, but they also take more time to unlock everything - especially since balancing the game becomes more difficult and not all tower upgrades feel worthwhile. Consequently, it can sometimes be really tricky to counter the waves effectively, leading to spikes in difficulty. This can result in having to grind or play a level several times to try out different combinations. A fast-forward function would help here by allowing you to test more options more quickly, but unfortunately this is missing, as is the case with the other games in the series. At least players can send enemy waves out earlier if they wish.
Beyond the main campaign, every stage can be tackled through additional modes, offering additional challenges and rewards for progress. There are five of these modes in total. These include the Classic Mode, which brings back the original Kingdom Rush arsenal and challenges players to complete the campaign using only eight towers, two spells and a single hero, just as they did fifteen years ago. Then there's the Iron Challenge, which pits players against one elite wave with just one life, while the Blitz Challenge delivers three fast-paced waves with quicker enemies and increased gold gain. In Hero Party, players command four heroes with no access to spells. In Spell Rush, players must survive using towers and faster-recharging spells alone, as heroes are removed entirely.
More stages, heroes, spells and towers are planned for addition through future content updates. Specifically, two mini-campaigns are planned for release this year, each comprising three stages, a new tower, a new hero and a new spell. As with the previous game, these should be free. Following this, paid-for DLC campaigns could be released, as with Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance.
Ironhide Game Studio is a game developer based in Montevideo, Uruguay. It is best known for the Kingdom Rush series, as well as Iron Marines. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the franchise. "Fifteen years ago, we sent our first wave down a path without ever imagining where it would take us. Genesis is our chance to go back to where it all started, while creating something completely new for both longtime Kingdom Rush players and people discovering the series for the first time. The community's support and feedback helped shape this game throughout development, and were incredibly excited that it's finally in players' hands," said Patricia Mazzei Soto, Community Manager at Ironhide Game Studio. The team added: "your support and feedback shaped this game directly, and we can't thank the Kingdom Rush community enough Fifteen years in, players are still the reason we get to make these games. Now Genesis belongs to them, and we can’t wait to see the strategies, challenges and stories they create."
Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis TD was released on 24 September 2026 for PC, Android and iOS. The mobile version costs €6.99, and additional in-app purchases are available for premium heroes, towers, and in-game currency. The developers emphasise that the campaign and all difficulty levels can be completed on the mobile version without making additional purchases. These purchases are intended to allow players to experiment with new strategies or to make the game easier. The PC version on Steam costs €20.49 and includes all heroes and towers from the outset; it does not include in-app purchases. The team from Uruguay has monetised previous instalments in a similar way. Therefore, the PC version is the one to recommend.
Conclusion
With Kingdom Rush, it's clear what you're getting. Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis TD is, once again, a good tower defense game, albeit slightly cautious and with some balance issues. But it has plenty of modes and a charming art style.
