The UK studio The Chinese Room is now independent again following a management buyout from Sumo Digital.

Following a management buyout, The Chinese Room is once again independent, under the leadership of studio head Ed Daly. The studio was founded in 2007 and acquired by Sumo Group, the parent company of Sumo Digital, for £2.2 million in August 2018. The Sumo Group, in turn, belongs to Tencent.

Further details of the deal, facilitated by Hiro Capital, have not been published, though it is known that some jobs were lost in the process (Game Developer). The British studio currently employs 55 people. Further job cuts are not planned.

"Independence means we can continue to create original games alongside our work with partner's IP, as we have been with last year's "Still Wakes the Deep" and the upcoming "Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines 2", with Paradox Interactive, launching in October", the company wrotes on Social Media. The studio is also known for Dear Esther, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture and Little Orpheus.
