Der Metro-Konzern war im 1. Quartal 2002 vor allem im Ausland erfolgreich, die Vertriebslinien Media/Saturn und Kaufhof mussten im Inland Federn lassen.

Der Metro-Konzern konnte im 1. Quartal des laufenden Geschäftsjahres seinen Umsatz gegenüber dem Vorjahresquartal um 5,2 Prozent auf 11,82 Mrd. Euro steigern. Nach Gewinnen im Vorjahresquartal musste jedoch ein negatives EBIT von 5,9 Mio. Euro ausgewiesen werden. Die Vertriebslinie Media-Saturn erhöhte den Umsatz um 5,9 Prozent auf 2,11 Mrd. Euro. Aufgrund der hohen Investitionen ins Auslandsgeschäft stand jedoch ein verringertes EBIT von 26,7 Mio. Euro zu Buche. 1,36 Mrd. Euro des Umsatzes wurden davon in Deutschland erzielt - ein Rückgang um 1,9 Prozent. Die Kaufhof-Warenhäuser verbuchten eine leichte Umsatzsteigerung auf 910,2 Mio. Euro. Dem gegenüber stand jedoch ein negatives EBIT von 7,3 Mio. Euro. In Deutschland ging der Umsatz von Kaufhof um 6,1 Prozent zurück. Metro führte dies auf die allgemeine Kaufzurückhaltung zurück. Für das laufende Geschäftsjahr bekräftigte der Konzern seinen geplanten Umsatzzuwachs um sechs Prozent auf 52 Mrd. Euro.
