Necesse is a top-down, procedurally generated, sandbox survival crafting action-adventure game that can be played alone or with multiple players, featuring scaled bosses. As they explore a seamless world, players can build, complete quests, conquer and establish settlements, as well as venture into dungeons. They can progress their character's gear and settlement by fighting, mining, exploring, crafting, trading and more. It is also possible to start a settlement and recruit settlers to work for the player. However, players must maintain their settlers' happiness and fend off invaders.

"Play as you want, customising difficulty and multiple gameplay rules to fit your preferences. If you don’t like raiders showing up at your settlement, turn them off, and fine-tune gameplay rules like the length of the day/night cycle or the difficulty of boss battles however you like. From pet parrots and penguins to genie lamps, ostrich mounts, and unique outfits, Necesse has countless options to explore. Whether you're playing singleplayer or with friends, and whether you’re cranking up the difficulty or taking it easy, each session is an opportunity to weave an epic tale unlike any that came before it." - Fair Games
Since the Early Access launch, a lot of new content has been added, including over 1,200 items, 16 bosses, 80 enemies, a new settlement system, two graphics overhauls, a new end-game progression system, major performance improvements, and support for Mac, Linux, and the Steam Deck.
In version 1.0, the world becomes a seamless place to explore. Rather than being made up of separate islands with loading screens between them, the entire world is connected to create one vast, interconnected landscape. This landscape is complete with a variety of bosses, biomes, cave systems and dungeons. The inhabitants of Necesse have been upgraded and can now interact with each other using emotes. Adventurers will also have access to a new talent tree, which will help them to face the final boss.

Necesse was developed by Fair Games, which is based in Aarhus, Denmark. However, it began as a solo hobby and passion project by Mads Skovgaard under the alias Fair back in 2012, with him spending about 1-2 hours on it daily. Since then, he has taught himself the necessary skills to develop a game, including programming, sound design, art, and game design. In 2019, the game reached a stage where he could work on it full time in order to release it on Steam Early Access on 12 December 2019. Fair Games is now a small studio of seven developers.
