Over Five Million Copies of Mortal Kombat 1 Sold
While Mortal Kombat 1 may not be able to match the huge success of Mortal Kombat 11, the latest game in the long-running franchise has sold more than five million copies worldwide.
Mortal Kombat 1 has sold over 5 million units worldwide since its launch in September 2023. Ed Boon, Co-Creator of Mortal Kombat & Injustice and Chief Creative Officer Mortal Kombat & NetherRealm Studios, wrote on X: "With over 5 million games sold, seeing Mortal Kombat 1 still in the top 15 most played Playstation 5 games makes us very grateful to Mortal Kombat fans. Thanks for continuing to support NetherRealm Studios games!" However, he is only referring to the engagement tracker published by Cirana for the US market and only for PlayStation 5. Mortal Kombat 1 hit the four million mark in mid-August 2024.
The franchise has now sold over 80 million copies (best-selling fighting game franchise) and is considered one of the core franchises for publisher Warner Bros. Games. However, Mortal Kombat 11, released in 2019, is and remains the biggest success to date, with the game having sold more than 15 million copies worldwide by 2022. However, at the end of November 2024, there were unconfirmed rumours that the expansion Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns had sold poorly and that there would be no further content after the end of Kombat Pack 2, no second story expansion and no Kombat Pack 3. Warner Bros. and NetherRealm have not commented on these rumours.
Speaking of Khaos Reigns: DLC guest fighter Conan the Barbarian is currently available in Early Access. The Cimmerian warrior is best known from the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as the main character. Next up is the T-1000 Terminator, which marks the end of Kombat Pack 2.
