It is difficult to say which of the two films has had the better start. According to the US magazine Variety and Box Office Mojo, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has grossed $190.8 million in the US and $181.8 million internationally after its first five days. That makes a total of $372.6 million worldwide. Its predecessor, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, grossed (in German) over $200 million in the US and $173 million internationally. Worldwide, it had taken $377.2 million after five days.

However, the Box Office Mojo figures are still missing data from numerous European countries, including Germany. According to our former colleagues at The Spot Media & Film (in German), The Super Mario Galaxy Movie sold 950,000 tickets in Germany alone on its opening weekend and took €10.55 million, equivalent to $12.21 million. As around 300,000 tickets had already been sold by Wednesday, the film has already reached seven figures in terms of admissions and is likely to have a correspondingly higher box office figure.

Whether The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will ultimately be able to dethrone its predecessor as the most successful video game adaptation of all time remains to be seen in the coming weeks. The Super Mario Bros. Movie also performed exceptionally well in the weeks following its release, drawing many fans to the cinemas.
