With Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, CD Projekt Red is bringing a technically sophisticated open-world action RPG to the Nintendo Switch 2. This would not have been possible on the original Switch, and despite some minor compromises, the port is truly impressive.

Following the rocky launch of Cyberpunk 2077 in 2020, particularly on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, CD Projekt Red worked hard to improve and optimise the game - a task they accomplished, particularly with the Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty expansion in 2023. As of November 2024, Cyberpunk 2077 had sold over 30 million copies worldwide, while sales of Phantom Liberty surpassed 10 million as of 28 May 2025 (with copies of the expansion sold both separately and as part of the Ultimate Edition bundle). To coincide with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, CD Projekt Red is bringing Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition to the new Nintendo console.

The Ultimate Edition of this open-world action-adventure role-playing game includes the base game and the Phantom Liberty spy thriller expansion. Set in Night City, players take on the role of cyber-enhanced mercenary V, fighting for glory and survival in a dark future with an engaging story, memorable characters and an impressive game world. Taking advantage of the Nintendo Switch 2's features, players can pick up their Joy-Con controllers and try out motion controls during combat. They can also activate Gyroscope Mode, use the Joy-Con (R) as a mouse controller - which is surprisingly good - or use the touch screen to swipe through menus, select character skills, or play the hacking mini-game.

In terms of graphics quality, the Nintendo Switch 2 game has to make some concessions compared to the PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X versions. However, it runs quite well on the new console - significantly better than on the PS4 and Xbox One. This is despite the texture quality being low in some places, the lack of ray tracing, and the reduced crowd density. In TV mode (docked), the game mostly runs at 1080p and 30 fps. In performance mode, 1080p and up to 40 fps are usually possible, although the actual frame rate can vary depending on the scene. In handheld mode, the resolution is up to 720p with dynamic scaling to maintain a stable frame rate. Here, too, 30 to 40 fps are possible, depending on the mode.

While the main game runs well on the Switch 2 for the most part, performance issues can occur in demanding scenes, particularly in Dogtown, the setting of Phantom Liberty. It's no surprise that Phantom Liberty wasn't released on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. It is not officially known whether DLSS is supported, but HDR10 is. It is also worth noting that graphics options such as film grain, chromatic aberration, depth of field, aperture effects, and motion blur can be enabled or disabled in the settings menu. Despite some compromises in graphics and occasional performance drops in demanding scenes, the game runs smoothly, looks good and offers a compelling gaming experience in both docked and handheld mode.

"We are delighted to bring the immersive world of the dark future to Nintendo players for the first time! Thanks to the Nintendo Switch 2 system, you can transport yourself to the City of Dreams at home or on the go. With every new feature, players can take center stage in the action to become the ultimate edgerunner." Adam Badowski, Game Director of Cyberpunk 2077

Although CD Projekt Red did not intend to develop any further updates for Cyberpunk 2077, another update (version 2.3) is scheduled for 26 June 2025. Patch 2.2 (December 2024), developed in collaboration with Virtous, introduced a variety of customisation options, improvements to the photo mode, and a hidden Balatro quest. It was intended to be the final content update for the role-playing game.

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition is available to purchase as a 64 GB physical game card (distributed by Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe) or as a download from the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2. Additional language packs are available to download from the Nintendo eShop. The full list of available voice-over language packs includes English, French, German, Italian, Spanish (Spain), Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian (for the base game only) and Simplified Chinese. The game is also available in the following text languages: English, Russian, French, Italian, German, Spanish (Spain), Arabic, Czech, Hungarian, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, Spanish (Latin America), Thai, Traditional Chinese, Turkish and Ukrainian.

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition was released on the Nintendo Switch 2 on launch day (05 June 2025), and initial reports suggest that it is the most successful third-party title to date on the relatively new console - for example, in the United States (Circana) and UK (NielsenIQ), but also in Germany in terms of physical game sales (GfK Entertainment).

Conclusion

Despite a few minor issues, CD Projekt Red has set the bar pretty high for other Switch ports with Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition.
