The New Game from Toukana and kurzgesagt is Called Star Birds
The new space game from Toukana Interactive and kurzgesagt was officially unveiled as Star Birds at the PC Gaming Show 2024. The second game from the creators of Dorfromantik will be released in Early Access on PC in 2025.
Toukana Interactive (Dorfromantik) from Berlin and kurzgesagt from Berlin/Munich have announced that their joint game is called Star Birds and will be released in Early Access for PC in 2025. The game, previously known as Project Mango, was revealed at the PC Gaming Show 2024.
Star Birds, Toukana's second game, takes an accessible approach to the genre of building and resource management games. Players help the Star Birds on their mission through the vastness of space and extract resources from asteroids for further processing. Over time, players will help the birds build a thriving mining and manufacturing operation to meet growing needs and discover new technologies. The style is based on the visuals of kurzgesagt.
It is possible to build on procedurally generated asteroids in 360 degrees. Hand-drawn connecting pipes, rogue-like elements and a high replay value are promised. The focus is on fun, not edutainment. It is not a serious game. "Instead, it aims to awaken a fascination for the universe through intrinsically motivating interactions and challenges in an exciting game world," says the Berlin-based company.
The first contact between Toukana Interactive and kurzgesagt took place at gamescom 2022. kurzgesagt had been considering developing a game for some time and was looking for potential partners. At the same time, Toukana was preparing to start pre-production on a new title, having just released the Switch version of Dorfromantik. Both studios were familiar with each other's creations, so the interest in working together was mutual from the start. "The atmosphere was also great, right down to the birds as mascots," writes Toukana. The collaboration then began in 2023.
Toukana Interactive is a German indie studio based in Berlin. It was founded in 2020 by four game design students from the HTW Berlin and the DE:HIVE Institute. At the end of 2022, a board game adaptation was released in collaboration with Pegasus Spiele Verlag, which was named Game of the Year in 2023. kurzgesagt is a YouTube channel and animation studio based in Munich and Berlin.
