In the constant battle for attention, it is crucial for a game to stand out in some way. Reka, from Berlin-based Emberstorm Entertainment, has something like that: a chicken-legged cottage companion while playing the role of a Slavic witch.

As an apprentice to the legendary witch Baba Jaga, players begin their journey in Reka. Set in an autumnal forest, players will practice their witchcraft, summon a customisable chicken-legged cottage and explore the procedurally generated world in third-person, solving quests, foraging for ingredients and uncovering the secret of Baba Jaga.

It's a cozy, story-rich cottage-building adventure with base building and crafting elements, where players can customise their cottage to a large extent and find new furniture, decorations and souvenirs through quests. On their journey through forests, swamps and villages, players will encounter animals, spirits and secrets, meet townsfolk, forage for ingredients and harness the power of nature to become a powerful wielder of magic. However, when it comes to quests, players can choose to help or hinder the villagers.

Writer Rhianna Pratchett (Overlord, Rise of the Tomb Raider) is working with Emberstorm Entertainment as the game's Lead Writer to enrich Reka's tale of witchcraft and wonder. "I've never been one to shy away from embracing the weird and wonderful, so helping craft the narrative of Reka with Emberstorm and Fireshine has been an absolute delight," said Rhianna Pratchett.

"With her marvellous writing style and incredible experience in storytelling, Rhianna has been tremendous at helping us bring the world of Reka to life and deliver an adventure that we can't wait for players to experience. Working with Rhianna has been a joy and a privilege, and we are so excited to have her ongoing support to help us enrich the game's narrative even further throughout Early Access." - Jesco von Puttkamer, Lead Narrative Designer at Emberstorm Entertainment about the collaboration with Writer Rhianna Pratchett

The game is being developed by Berlin-based game studio Emberstorm Entertainment. Seven people are currently working on the title, with three others listed in the credits as former team members. The studio was founded in 2020 and this is their debut title. "With Berlin being located in previously Slavic territory, we decided to make our debut title REKA, a game that incorporates Slavic culture and mythology," the team said. Emberstorm Entertainment chose Fireshine Games as publishing partner. It is a global publisher of digital and physical video games based in London, previously known as Sold Out. Originally established in 2014, Fireshine Games has built a portfolio of digital games including Core Keeper and Shadows of Doubt, while partnering with studio to bring digital hits to physical release, including Lies of P from Neowiz, Balatro from Playstack, and Planet Zoo: Console Edition from Frontier Developments. Fireshine Games is part of the EG7 group of companies.

Reka will be released on PC on 12 September in Early Access for around 20 Euros. The full version is scheduled for release in 2025. "We're planning on releasing Reka's prologue and chapter one for Early Access launch. (...) In a relaxed playthrough of the initial Early Access launch content, we'd estimate this to be roughly 6-8 hours. (...) For 1.0 launch, the remaining chapters and Reka's complete story will be available," the team says.

Conclusion

Reka takes players on a fascinating journey into a mythological world where the customisable chicken-legged cottage companion plays a very special role.
