Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 7 biohazard (PS5 Retail)
Capcom is bringing three Resident Evil games to retail stores with 'next-generation updates' for PlayStation 5. These are the two remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, as well as Resident Evil 7 biohazard. All have sold millions of copies for the Japanese publisher.
The latest instalments of the Resident Evil franchise have been a huge success for Capcom. The 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2, which kicked off the successful remake wave of Capcom's best-selling franchise (163 million units sold across all RE games), has now sold over 14.5 million copies worldwide - well ahead of the 1998 original, which sold nearly five million copies on the first PlayStation. Following Monster Hunter: World and Monster Hunter Rise, the remake of RE2 is Capcom's third most successful game of all time. The Japanese publisher did an excellent job of breathing new life into an acclaimed original by using modern technology and a clever change of perspective, namely the over-shoulder camera instead of fixed camera angles.
Unsurprisingly, the remake of the third instalment followed a little over a year later, in April 2020. Compared to the smash hit that was RE2, the remake of Resident Evil 3 sold 9.20 million copies, which is still a strong number, especially when you consider that the original, released in 1999, sold only 3.5 million. And then there is Resident Evil 7 biohazard. Released in January 2017, the game put the franchise back on the survival horror track after the (too) action-oriented Resident Evil 6. It has since sold 14 million copies, making it Capcom's fourth most successful game of all time. While the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3 relied on an over-the-shoulder perspective, this game instilled fear from an immersive first-person perspective.
Just in time for the holiday season, Capcom is releasing these three hugely successful games as new retail editions for PlayStation 5 - and all of them include the next-generation upgrades that were released digitally in summer 2022, making the games ready for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The PC versions have also received these updates. This upgrade does not change the content, nor does it change the gameplay of the titles. Instead, Capcom has made some significant technical upgrades to make the experience even more immersive. This means that the three games, based on Capcom's proprietary RE engine, support 4K resolution, ray tracing, high frame rates and 3D audio on the latest generation of consoles. The latter in particular adds to the horror atmosphere. DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are supported on PlayStation 5.
Players who have already purchased Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 or Resident Evil 7 biohazard on one of the previous console generations have already received a free upgrade option, but those who have not played Capcom's games and/or have a penchant for retail editions will be able to experience these technically revised survival horror highlights for themselves in early December.
On 6 December 2024, the PS5 editions of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 7 Biohazard will be released in stores.
