The third game in the A Plague Tale franchise is a prequel. Resonance: A Plague Tale: Requiem is set 15 years before the events of A Plague Tale: Requiem. In this action-adventure game, players take on the role of Sophia, a young plunderer setting out for the distant shores of Minotaur's Island to uncover the secrets of her past. There, she must overcome challenges, navigate paths, and solve puzzles while trying to stay one step ahead of the pursuing army. She is accompanied by her companion and plunderer, Leni, with whom she enjoys surprisingly harmonious and easy-going conversations. However, the drama aspect goes a bit too far in places.

Unlike the other games in the series, which focused on stealth and avoiding combat, Resonance focuses on direct combat. While some sections are stealth-based (for example, when facing an invincible opponent), Sophia will have to engage in combat with enemies. Players must master parrying and stringing together rapid attack combinations with her dagger and sword. The action-packed, fluid combat is reminiscent of modern action-adventures such as Tomb Raider or God of War (although not quite as versatile). The fights are dynamic and precise, and timing is important — and the grappling hook is a really great, enriching element. Additionally, players can improve their abilities and combat strength by levelling up their talents, allowing for at least a slight degree of specialisation. There are also five difficulty levels, with which players can adjust the desired level of challenge. On the lowest level (Narrative), dodging and parrying are even automatic.

Aside from combat, the game focuses on traversal and platforming through stunningly beautiful, richly detailed locations. The game is accompanied by outstanding music with an original score by composer Olivier Derivière. It is one of his finest works to date. However, these locations largely consist of linear areas with a few branching paths, and there are also items and upgrades to discover here and there. Then there are puzzles, which form a central part of the 15-hour-long story and are closely linked to ancient history – it is precisely here that Tomb Raider’s charm really comes to the fore. These puzzles involve manipulating light and ancient mechanisms. As Sophia delves deeper into the island's depths, she relives the Minoan era through flashbacks, which means solving puzzles on two levels. If players get stuck, they can consult the excellent notebook for further information. The flashbacks take place nearly 2,000 years ago and are experienced through the eyes of a legendary hero. Meanwhile, signs of an evil power emerge in both eras.

The game was developed by Asobo Studio, a French video game developer based in Bordeaux, which was founded in 2002. The studio has developed over 25 games for consoles and PCs, including Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020), Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, A Plague Tale: Innocence (2019), and A Plague Tale: Requiem (2022). The studio employs around 300 people. The publisher of the title is Focus Entertainment, which is also based in France and is part of Pullup Entertainment. The company previously published the first two instalments of the A Plague Tale series.

Resonance: A Plague Tale: Legacy launched on 27 August 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. The PC version costs €49.99, while the console edition is priced at €59.99. The game is also available on day one with Xbox Game Pass and supports Xbox Play Anywhere. A Collector's Edition is available to pre-order across Europe and is scheduled to begin shipping at the end of October.

Conclusion

Resonance: A Plague Tale: Legacy is a gripping, classic-style action-adventure game and, in terms of gameplay, Asobo's finest work to date. It's a shame that games like this have become so rare.
