With S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, the Ukrainian development studio GSC Game World pulled off a minor miracle in 2024. Developed largely in subway tunnels and other bomb shelters during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the game was released in a rough but well-received state and has since evolved into a true masterpiece. Most recently, it received a massive technical overhaul with the major “Back to the Zone” Update 2.0, followed by Update 2.1, “The Zone Lookout,” in October 2026, which further improved NPC behavior.

So while Heart of Chornobyl continues to be eagerly improved, the additional content doesn’t stop there. With S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope, GSC released the first major paid expansion for the game in August 2026. In this expansion, players embark on a new expedition that features expanded faction gameplay: Two distinct factions from the main game—which players can join or fight against—are significantly expanded and receive new, dedicated quest lines. In particular, the expedition that takes the protagonist into the heart of the nuclear reactor for the first time introduces several impressive new set pieces and arenas. Additional enemy types present new challenges—some of which are extremely difficult.
Cost of Hope is the first of two planned big DLCs for Heart of Chornobyl, both of which are included in the Season Pass that is part of the game's Ultimate Edition.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope was released on August 20, 2026, as downloadable content for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series.
