Just three days after its release, the Elden Ring expansion Shadow of the Erdtree has sold five million copies worldwide. It is also currently the best-reviewed expansion at Metacritic.

Publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment and developer FromSoftware have announced a strong launch of the first and only expansion for Elden Ring. Shadow of the Erdtree has sold over five million units worldwide in its first three days on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC (Steam). The main game, Elden Ring, was released in February 2022 and sold over 25 million copies by June 2024.

"This milestone could only be achieved with the tremendous support of fans around the world, for which the company is deeply grateful," writes Bandai Namco.

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is currently the highest-rated expansion on Metacritic, with a Metascore of 95 based on 60 reviews (37th place overall). The main game is ahead of it, however, with a Metascore of 96 (26th overall). User feedback, especially on Steam, is less positive, with criticism of the high level of difficulty on the one hand and technical problems such as stutters (some of which are known from the main game) and the lack of contemporary features such as support for upscaling methods on PC on the other. The publisher has even responded to criticism of the difficulty level with an official guidepost: "How to strengthen your character in Shadow of the Erdtree".
