The release of the Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut is a surprisingly big success for Sony. According to CCUs, it was the second strongest PlayStation PC release on Steam to date. It even outperformed God of War, Marvel's Spider-Man and Horizon Zero Dawn.

Following its release on 16 May, Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut has had a surprisingly strong launch on PC. Published by Sony Interactive Entertainment aka PlayStation PC LLC, it was the second-best launch of a PlayStation game on PC, with only Helldivers 2 achieving a higher number of concurrent players - despite Helldivers 2 being released alongside the PlayStation 5 game, costing less and being multiplayer focused. Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut even beat God of War, Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered, Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition and The Last of Us Part 1 with a CCU peak of 77,154.

It is the first game from Sucker Punch Productions, known for Sky Raccoon and Infamous, to be released on PC. Nixxes Software from the Netherlands developed the PC edition from 2023 onwards. Ghost of Tsushima was released for PlayStation 4 in July 2020 and as a Director's Cut for PlayStation 5 in August 2021, meaning the PC version was released almost four years after the PS5 release.

It is also the first PlayStation title on PC that uses a new PlayStation overlay, which includes your Friends list, Trophies, Settings, and a Profile. "Thanks to cross-play support, Legends players on Windows PCs can team up with players on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles and use in-game voice chat to communicate. You will be required to sign into your PlayStation Network account to access Legends mode," Nixxes says. This requires a PlayStation Network account, but the entire single-player mode can be played without a PSN account. Speaking of PSN. The subsequent introduction of the PSN account as a requirement for Helldivers 2, and the removal of the game from numerous markets where PSN is not available, caused a huge storm of controversy. Sony has since decided to stop requiring this. Following the outcry, it was quickly clarified that Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut by Sucker Punch and Nixxes does not require a PSN account.

It is not yet known which game Sony will bring to PC next, apart from Until Dawn. Other possibilities include God of War Ragnarök (November 2022) or The Last of Us Part II Remastered (January 2024), or Bloodborne (March 2015), which has been widely requested by PC gamers. Speaking at the company's annual report presentation in February, Hiroki Totoki said that Sony Interactive Entertainment was looking to improve margins with a more aggressive strategy for publishing PC games. Sony must "work proactively" to bring more games to multiple platforms, he said. Totoki is president, COO and CFO of the Sony Group. He took over Jim Ryan's duties as President and CEO of the PlayStation division on an interim basis.
