With an estimated half a million sales, The Last Spell, developed by Ishtar Games and published by Nacon (originally The Arcade Crew, Dotemu), has been a huge success in its niche. The game was launched on Early Access on 3 June 2021 and left it almost two years later. In this turn-based tactical RPG, players defend the last bastion of humanity with a squad of heroes against waves of approaching enemies, all the while enjoying the atmospheric pixel graphics and driving soundtrack (by Rémi Gallégo, aka The Algorithm). They exterminate monsters with magic and physical force at night and rebuild the battered city defences during the day.

The game relies on rogue-lite mechanics for its permanent progression system and has numerous deep mechanics under the hood. There are a variety of classes, stats, skills, perks and traits, as well as lots of items. Each weapon has its own skill set and playstyle. The Last Spell is tough, throwing large numbers of enemies at players, but it plays remarkably well. It's no surprise that the game, which challenges even the most hardcore players with its multiple Apocalypse levels, has been expanded with two DLCs: Dwarves of Runenberg, which introduces dwarves as a new race, and Elves of Amberwald, which introduces elves as a new race, each with a new map. Tales of Torment is the third and final expansion for the game and is available for €7.99. However, this time there is no new map or race. Instead, it introduces new elements and systems, including new challenges, objectives, (the most powerful) items and perks, as well as a new god seeking to reclaim his lost memories.

The new building, the Altar, grants permanent bonuses known as Epiphanies. These include unique weapons, armour, trinkets and perks that can alter the way you play, with some having a more noticeable effect than others. There are almost 100 Epiphanies to collect and exchange for Memories. Players can take on new challenges called Ordeals and Divergences to collect these Memories. Ordeals are additional objectives that players must complete each night. These are procedurally generated and help to increase replayability. The same applies to Divergences. Every night, a Divergence reshapes the fights and introduces new modifiers, such as more elites or Heroes with penalties. Finally, there is a new god that can unlock even more Epiphanies by completing up to 50 Eposes, which are similar to the Favors in the main game. Tales of Torment thus appeals to those who enjoy harder challenges, new goals and more variety in the nights, as well as very powerful new items and perks. However, it should be noted that the unlocking process is rather slow. But it would have been nice to have another map.

The game and its DLCs were developed by Ishtar Games, a game studio founded in 2005 and based in Lille and Bordeaux, France. Formerly known as CCCP, the studio previously developed the Dead in Bermuda and Dead in Vinland games, as well as The Last Spell. On 7 October 2021, the studio was fully acquired by the French publisher Nacon. Since then, they have also been working on their own games, such as Lakeburg Legacies, as well as the 'indie publishing branch' of Nacon. In this role, they have signed partnerships with other independent studios in order to develop and promote a large catalogue of games, such as Spirited Thief from Koi Snowman Games, Forgotten Mines from Cannibal Goose, and Worlds of Aria from Ludogram. Ishtar Games has around 20 employees. On 19 February 2026, Dead in Antares will be released. This is a turn-based survival management game with RPG elements set on an alien planet. On the same day, publisher Nacon will also release Styx: Shards of Darkness, a stealth adventure game developed by its internal studio Cyanide.

On 12 March 2026, GreedFall: The Dying World will end its Early Access period, and the role-playing game from Spiders will also be released on consoles. Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss from Big Bad Wolf is scheduled for 16 April 2026. Also planned for release in 2026 are The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu (ACE Team) and Edge of Memories (Midgar Studio).

The Last Spell - Tales of Torment was released on 5 February 2026, along with patch 1.3 for the main game. This features four new Apocalypse modifiers, a ballistae rework and extensive balancing, as well as the final Steam Deck verification (Change Log).

Conclusion

Even though it's a bummer that The Last Spell - Tales of Torment doesn't feature any new maps, it does introduce a variety of items that shake up the gameplay, although unlocking them can be time-consuming.

Features
  • Altars that grant permanent bonuses
  • Nearly 100 Epiphanies that can alter playstyle (sometimes more, sometimes less)
  • Higher replay value and more variations
