With a games location studio, German Federal state Bavaria wants to build up the first data base for coming changes in its game funding strategy. The games location study is being conducted on behalf of Medien.Bayern GmbH with its initiatives Games/Bavaria and XPLR: MEDIA in Bavaria. It analyzes the economic significance, structure, and development potential of the Bavarian games industry – both quantitatively and qualitatively. In addition to figures on companies, employment, turnover, and investments, challenges, opportunities, and areas of innovation are also examined through industry surveys and in-depth interviews. The FilmFernsehFonds Bayern (FFF Bayern) is supporting the study, which also analyzes funding-specific issues. The contract to carry out the study was awarded to consulting firm Goldmedia GmbH. Initial results are expected to be available in early 2026.

The state is providing an additional €42,000 for the study via Games/Bavaria. This brings the total funding for 2025 to €686,000. At the state parliament plenary session, Digital Minister Dr. Fabian Mehring and Felix Locke, Member of the State Parliament, presented the funding check to Games/Bavaria. The necessary funds were made available as part of a parliamentary group initiative.

Digital Minister Dr. Fabian Mehring: "Bavaria is the number one location for games in Germany – and we want it to stay that way. We are doubling our funding for games and now investing additional resources in knowledge. Because if you want to understand the industry, you have to be able to measure it. With this new study, we are laying the foundation for funding that is as smart as the minds that develop games in Bavaria."
