The Witcher IV Revealed at The Game Awards 2024
CD Projekt Red has unveiled The Witcher IV, the first game in the new Witcher saga, with a cinematic trailer at The Game Awards 2024 in Los Angeles. The role-playing game aims to be the most immersive and ambitious open-world Witcher game to date.
During this year's The Game Awards, CD Projekt Red announced The Witcher IV, previously known by its codename Polaris. The game, a sequel to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, marks the beginning of a new Witcher saga with Ciri taking on the role of protagonist. "We're kicking off a brand-new Witcher saga, this time with Ciri as the heart of the story," said Sebastian Kalemba, Game Director. "It feels so good to finally be able to say those words - for the longest time we knew that we wanted Ciri to be the protagonist of The Witcher IV; it just felt natural to us and we believe that Ciri deserves it. In this game we want to explore what it means to truly become a witcher by following Ciri on her Path. This trailer is a taste of both that, and just how dark and grounded the world of The Witcher can be."
The Polish company is continuing one of Europe's biggest and most successful gaming franchises. The nearly six-minute trailer offers a first look at protagonist Ciri as she takes on the role of a witch in a remote village that has been terrorised for generations by a monster that demands ritual sacrifice. The trailer was pre-rendered in a custom build of Unreal Engine 5 on an unannounced Nvidia GeForce RTX GPU. Built on the same technology as The Witcher IV, using assets and models from the game itself, it aims to give players the cinematic look that the game is aiming for. It was created in close collaboration between CD Projekt Red and Platige Image, who were responsible for the intro cinematics in previous entries in the series.
The Witcher IV is a single-player, open-world role-playing game from CD Projekt Red. It aims to be the most immersive and ambitious open-world Witcher game to date. It will be released for PC and consoles. No release date has been announced, but the game only went into full production a few weeks ago (GamesMarkt reported). "I'm proud to confirm that several weeks ago the Polaris team wrapped up preproduction and moved on to full-scale production - the most intensive phase of development. We are very pleased with our progress on this project, and I wish to thank the team for its dedication," says Michał Nowakowski, Joint CEO of CD Projekt. At the end of October 2024, around 400 developers were working on the next Witcher game.
