Jack O'Hara "the Green Beret", Thomas "the Sapper" Hancock, Francis T. "the Sniper" Woolridge, Samuel "the Driver" Brooklyn, James "the Marine" Blackwood and Rene "the Spy" Duchamp are back. German developer Claymore Game Studio and German publisher Kalypso Media are bringing back the iconic sextet known as Commandos.

Commandos is back. This is the first new game in the franchise since 2006. Originally developed by Pyro Studios from Spain, the series had its heyday at the turn of the century and was a defining real-time stealth-tactics game set in the Second World War. The final instalment, Commandos: Strike Force, was no longer a real-time tactics game, but a first-person shooter with stealth elements. After that, the series was dormant for a long time.

In July 2018, Kalypso Media acquired the brand rights to the series and subsequently released HD remasters of Commandos 2 and Commandos 3 for PC and consoles. In 2020, Claymore Game Studios was founded in Darmstadt with the aim of developing a new game in the series. Development was funded with €1,532,519 from the German government's computer games funding programme.

Developer and publisher rely on the established real-time tactical stealth gameplay of the first games, using the distinctive abilities of six iconic characters to infiltrate bases and achieve other objectives. There are a variety of ways to achieve objectives in over ten missions. These missions can be completed with a friend in 2-player co-operative multiplayer, either online or locally in split-screen.

"Commandos: Origins takes the complex tactical gameplay of the classic Commandos games to the next level. It features even larger maps, an isometric 3D real-time environment with zoom-in and rotation capabilities, and more interactions with the environment, such as the ability to use surroundings to eliminate enemies. These elements significantly enhance the replayability of the game. The combination of massive maps and various approaches to solving missions offers players a wide variety of tactical options and ensures each map remains engaging over multiple playthroughs. Additionally, multi-story buildings are now seamlessly integrated into the maps, removing the need to switch to a separate gameplay window." - Kalypso Media

On 9 April 2025, Commandos: Origins will be digitally released for PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. The latest instalment in the real-time stealth tactics series will be available for €49.99 (PC) and €59.99 (Xbox Series X|S, PS5). It will be available on Xbox Game Pass for console and PC from day one. The retail version for PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 will be available from 22 May 2025. The digital version for Xbox One (including Xbox Smart Delivery) and PlayStation 4 will follow later this year.

Conclusion

Commandos is all about real-time tactical stealth gameplay, and that is exactly what Claymore Game Studios and Kalypso Media are serving up.
