EA to Permanently Shut Down Origin in April 2025
In mid-April, Electronic Arts will finally shut down the Origin digital distribution platform. The transition to the new EA App has been underway for years. The reason for the termination is the end of Microsoft's support for 32-bit software.
In 2011, Electronic Arts launched its own digital distribution platform for PC games, Origin, as an alternative to Steam. Later, 3rd-party titles were also distributed on it. However, Origin will be shut down on 17 April 2025 because Microsoft has stopped supporting 32-bit software. All Origin users will have to switch to the new EA app.
The beta test for this EA app started in September 2020, followed by the release of the full version two years later. The publisher assures a smooth transition from Origin to the EA app, especially since macOS is also supported from the beginning of 2024. Notably, Electronic Arts has been distributing its games on Steam again since the end of 2019, with some games also requiring the EA app software to be installed and used in the background.
Electronic Arts: "Yes, your account and games will transfer to the EA app. Log in to the EA app with the same account you use for Origin. When you log in, any games you had on Origin will be ready to play. Games that list in-game hours in Origin will list the same hours in the EA app. Anything you've saved through Origin’s cloud will also transfer. We can't promise that mods will transfer to the EA app. Check with mod creators to see if your content can be transferred."
