Job Cuts at Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment
On X, Respawn Entertainment, a studio owned by Electronic Arts, announced the cancellation of two projects and the dismissal of an unspecified number of employees. US media reports indicate that further layoffs are also planned at EA. Up to 400 jobs could be affected.
There has been no official confirmation of the layoffs at the parent company Electronic Arts. Reports are circulating throughout the US trade press, from IGN to GamesBeat to the usually well-informed Bloomberg. These reports mention 300 to 400 people affected from various departments. This figure also includes around 100 employees who work at the studio subsidiary Respawn Entertainment (Apex).
Respawn itself had admitted to job cuts a few hours earlier via X, but did not give any specific figures. According to the statement, two projects in the early stages of development had been cancelled. There had also been team adjustments at Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi.
"These decisions aren't easy, and we are deeply grateful to every teammate affected – their creativity and contributions have helped build Respawn into what it is today. We're offering meaningful support to those impacted, including exploring new opportunities within EA", states Respawn Entertainment on X.
According to Bloomberg, one of the early-stage projects was a game based on the Titanfall IP. According to IGN, the second project is an unspecified multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS), for which at least one job posting was advertised last year. The project was developed by a team previously involved in Respawn's cancelled Star Wars FPS project. However, neither Bloomberg's nor IGN's information has been confirmed.
