Fighting Extremism With Games: USK and Stiftung Digitale Spielekultur at Safer Internet Day 2025
The USK and the Stiftung Digitale Spielekultur are planning an event for Safer Internet Day 2025. Together they are organising the digital parents' evening "Games against Extremism" to show how games can educate.
On 11 February 2025, a network of partners will work together to improve online safety and create a better internet environment for children and young people on Safer Internet Day 2025. The Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle (USK) and the Stiftung Digitale Spielekultur (Digital Games Culture Foundation) are inviting parents to a digital parents' evening on "Games against extremism". Both will show how games can help to raise young people's awareness of extremism and provide examples of games that educate on the subject.
"Parents have a lot of questions when it comes to digital media. At our parents' evenings, we provide practical tips on how to encourage responsible media use and thus support the safe use of games for children and young people. Thanks to the USK's expertise in the field of games and the protection of minors from harmful media, we are able to offer parents a platform where they can get answers to their questions about dealing with digital games. With the digital parents' evening 'Games against Extremism', we are setting an example of education and empowerment on Safer Internet Day 2025," says Elisabeth Secker, Managing Director of the USK.
Nandita Wegehaupt, Managing Director of the Stiftung Digitale Spielekultur, adds: "For most children and young people, computer and video games are a popular leisure activity. Having fun and promoting values such as tolerance, respect and diversity can go hand in hand. We are therefore looking forward to the USK's Digital Parents' Evening, where we can give everyone an insight into how digital games can help prevent extremism and what parents and guardians should be aware of in this area."
The online event will take place on 11 February 2024 from 19:00 - 20:30 via Microsoft Teams (details). Speakers include Melanie Endler (Media Education and Cooperation Officer, USK), Maurice Matthieu (Member Services and Communication Officer, USK) and Matej Samide (Project Manager, Stiftung Digitale Spielekultur).
