School Internship Programme for Games in Hamburg to Continue in 2026
Sixteen ninth-grade school pupils in Hamburg gained an insight into game development at InnoGames, Fishlabs and Playa Games during the 'Schulpraktikum Games' programme. Next year, the programme will continue.
From 30 June to 18 July, 16 school pupils from Hamburg gained insight into careers in professional game development as part of the "Schulpraktikum Games" programme. This internship programme is a unique collaboration between the gaming companies InnoGames, Fishlabs and Playa Games; the Games Master and Illustration degree programme at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg); the Creative Gaming initiative; and Gamecity Hamburg. The programme will continue in 2026 in cooperation with additional games companies. Applications for the three-week internship in January and the summer of 2026 are now open (website). https://schulpraktikum-games.de/.
On 18 July, 16 school pupils from Hamburg took to the stage at InnoGames' town hall to present what they had learnt during their three-week work placement in the games industry. The pupils attended workshops at the participating games companies, where they explored career profiles in the industry. At InnoGames, cybersecurity was covered, while at Fishlabs, the students brought a scene from a computer game to life using sounds they had recorded themselves. HAW Hamburg ran workshops in which students created concept art for characters and games. At Playa Games, the focus was on the role of a narrative designer. Working in groups, the students developed worlds, storylines and characters for new games. A character that proved particularly popular with the audience at the final presentation was "Bärnhard", a two-metre-tall brown bear who works as a blacksmith. At the end of the internship, the students applied what they had learnt in a five-hour game jam based on the theme 'Other Worlds'. They used programs such as Pocket Platformer and Scratch to develop the games.
