gamescom 2022: all the figures, all the facts about the fair's comeback
265,000 visitors from 100 countries, 25,000 trade visitors, half of them from abroad, 130 million views, including twelve million views on Opening Night Live and 1,100 exhibitors, 75 percent of them from abroad - the data that Koelnmesse and the game are now presenting at the end of the fair are impressive and exceed the expectations of the industry.
After a week that was as exhausting as it was beautiful, most of the key figures for gamescom 2022 have been determined. And in view of the great scepticism in the run-up to the show, they are more than respectable. According to the organisers Koelnmesse and game, around 265,000 visitors from 100 countries came to gamescom at the end of the week. This means that the show reached the level of the years 2010 to 2012, which many did not think possible in the run-up to the event. There was no concrete forecast from the official side. The word from the industry was that an approach to the 200,000 mark was already a success, given the absence of names like Sony PlayStation, Nintendo, EA or Activision Blizzard..
The other key figures are also impressive: 1,100 exhibitors from 53 countries showed their products to more than 25,000 trade visitors, half of whom came from abroad. The Opening Night Live reached twelve million views by the end of the fair, and the digital reach at this time totalled 130 million views. More than 100,000 people attended the gamescom city festival and the concerts on the stages at Rudolfplatz and Hohenzollernring.
The industry association game emphasises that the fair was in demand politically as never before. More than 270 German and international politicians came to Cologne. The political opening on Wednesday afternoon was attended, among others, by North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister President Hendrik Wüst, the Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection, Michael Kellner, as well as Cologne's Mayor and Chairwoman of the Supervisory Board of Koelnmesse Henriette Reker. Robert Habeck, Federal Minister of Economics and Vice Chancellor, was not present due to the current situation regarding energy supply in Germany. He did, however, speak out in a video message and described himself as a "games minister" who wants to strengthen Germany as a business location in order to increase the domestic market share of German games developments. He also announced his intention to open gamescom 2023.
True to the motto after the fair is before the fair, the date for 2023 has already been set. gamescom 2023 will take place from 23 to 27 August. The Opening Night Live is planned for 22 August. So - if there are no changes to the concept - devcom will take place on 21 and 22 August, and the gamescom congress on 24 August.
