EverSiege: Untold Ages from Tindalos Interactive and Dear Villagers is reminiscent of Warcraft III mods such as Castle Defense. It demonstrates that blending MOBA, action, strategy, and roguelite elements can be successful in a standalone game.
In EverSiege: Untold Ages, one player - or up to three in cooperative mode - must defend Bastion, the last human city left standing. They have seven days to turn the tide against the enemy hordes' assault and bring the fight to enemy territory. The enemies grow stronger day by day as they advance along a winding path from their kingdom to Bastion. Players must prevent this while playing as one of six different Wargears. These are played and controlled much like heroes in a MOBA, either via mouse-click or WASD controls, and they can unleash skills. However, there is much more to the game, which players will gradually discover as they play. As well as the Wargears, which are essentially different specialised classes, there are six essences: Nature for healing, Shadow for stealth, and Frost for DPS and crowd control, for example. Players must select two of these before the start of a match to gain additional skills. Ideally, players should tailor their essences to the threats lurking on the map. PvP and PvPvE are not part of the game. It's only PvE.
It is important to defeat the enemies moving towards the bastion along the lane — either by using the combat power of the Wargears or by supporting the regular troops that automatically charge out of the bastion to confront them. At certain locations, it is also possible to construct defensive structures such as arrow towers, mage towers or catapults. These structures conveniently create a magical barrier when built on both sides of the lane. This creates strategic choke points where the fighting intensifies.
There’s a lot more to discover beyond the lane — a whole lot more . There are gold mines where workers extract gold, which is then brought to the Bastion. This gold is used to build new towers, expand the Bastion (adding more troops and different types that spawn automatically) and purchase upgrades. At the same time, there are numerous enemies and creeps that can be defeated to obtain treasures or shards for in-run Wargear improvements. These are divided into different stats, which influence the character’s strength, and can seem overwhelming, especially at the beginning. Players also receive XP to level up and improve their character. There are also additional events and quests on the map. At night, enemy attacks intensify, but during the day, there is time to explore the map and strengthen the kingdom. Players must defend the Bastion, keep an eye on the lane, strengthen their characters, explore the map, gather resources and upgrade everything. There are six Wargears, six Essences, 20 troop types to deploy and upgrade, 38 buildings, 31 enemy types, 72 spell evolutions and 70 ability evolutions, 148 items (80 artefacts, 36 relics, 12 shards and 20 potions) and 70 random ability upgrades. This allows for quite extensive build diversity.
EverSiege: Untold Ages has a roguelite structure. After each run, players earn "Echoes", which can be spent in the Legacy Evolution tab. As players complete runs, they will be able to unlock more mechanics, buildings, units, and upgrades to help them against increasingly strong opponents. Echoes can also be spent to unlock Wargears and Essences in the main hub. The map is always the same (like in a MOBA), but it changes procedurally, as do the objects and surprises alongside the lane.
Overall, the game is a really good, challenging mix. Its design feels familiar and comfortable, but it struggles with technical issues and design quirks. Specifically, the game is prone to crashing. During testing, it crashed twice during two-player co-op multiplayer after around 25–30 minutes, due to a desync error that could not be resolved. There are also no save points as a fallback. Furthermore, there are reports that the game crashes in solo mode too (a hotfix has already been released), meaning no meta-progress is collected. Additionally, there is no shared progress in multiplayer mode. Instead, the developers recommend on the Steam forum that players copy their save files after each run and replace them on their teammates' devices. For a cooperative game, this is unfortunately completely outdated and inconvenient. The developers agree and have already announced that they will look further into the shared multiplayer metaprogression system and how it can be improved for everyone involved. 'Ultimately, it should be intuitive, rewarding and fun,' they wrote. The only question is why this important element of a co-op game wasn’t considered earlier. They also plan to look into whether it is possible to save and resume an active run. This is trickier than it might seem.
"We love old Warcraft III mods such as Castle Defense, and EverSiege: Untold Ages is the vision given life to our aim at grasping that nostalgia feeling, and it does so much more. We see it as a fresh take on Action-Strategy games, a mix of genres, MOBA, RTS, Roguelite, for PvE enjoyers, whether they want to play solo or with friends." - Romain Clavier, Creative Director at Tindalos Interactive
EverSiege: Untold Ages was developed by Tindalos Interactive, an independent video game studio founded in May 2010 by Aurélien Josse and Romain Clavier. Following the release of Stellar Impact in 2012 and Etherium in 2015, the small team made a name for itself with Battlefleet Gothic: Armada (2016) and Battlefleet Gothic: Armada II (2019), before releasing Aliens: Dark Descent (2023). All of these games are strategy games, and with the exception of Stellar Impact, all of the titles were published by Focus Entertainment. The studio was also involved in producing the French/Italian 3D-animated TV series Foot 2 Rue Extrême. EverSiege: Untold Ages is Tindalos Interactive's first game in collaboration with publisher Dear Villagers (formerly Playdius). Based in Montpellier in southern France, Dear Villagers is a boutique publishing label with a team of twenty people. They have published The Forgotten City (2021), The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos (2020), Fabledom (2024) and Caravan Sandwich (2024).
EverSiege: Untold Ages was released on 26 March 2026 for PC via the Steam and Epic Games Store, priced at €19.99.
Conclusion
EverSiege: Untold Ages is a compelling blend of MOBA, action and strategy, offering diverse build options and bearing a clear resemblance to Warcraft III mods. Unfortunately, the game suffers from technical issues, and the co-op mode (shared progress) feels antiquated.
