3.5 Million Nintendo Switch 2 Consoles Sold in Four Days
Nintendo Switch 2 is Nintendo's fastest-selling console to date. A total of 3.5 million units were sold worldwide within the first four days.
Nintendo has confirmed that its latest gaming console, Nintendo Switch 2, sold over 3.5 million units worldwide in the four days following its launch on 5 June 2025. This makes it the fastest-selling Nintendo gaming console to date. No further details on sales in individual regions were provided.
"Nintendo Switch 2 is the next evolution of Nintendo Switch. We are delighted that it has already been embraced by so many players across Europe," said Luciano Pereña, CEO and President of Nintendo of Europe. "We look forward to seeing Nintendo fans connect through games like Mario Kart World and share their experiences with family and friends near and far."
"Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go," said Nintendo of America President and Chief Operating Officer Doug Bowser. "We are thankful for their response and happy to see the fun they are already having with Nintendo Switch 2 as they explore new features and games that bring friends and family together in new ways."
For comparison, Sony Interactive Entertainment shipped 4.5 million PlayStation 5 units in the first seven weeks after its release but struggled to meet demand due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic at the time.
According to Nintendo's official forecasts, the Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to sell around 15 million units in the 2026 fiscal year - from April 2025 to the end of March 2026. However, the data does not indicate how many units will be available globally on the launch date or during the launch quarter. Switch 2 software sales are estimated at 45 million over this period. For comparison, the original Nintendo Switch was released in March 2017, towards the end of the 2017 fiscal year, with 2.74 million consoles sold in a single month. In the following fiscal year (April 2017 to the end of March 2018), approximately 15.06 million Switch consoles were sold. Therefore, in 13 months, the Nintendo Switch sold 17.8 million units. Excluding the last quarter, around 14.87 million consoles were sold in the first ten months (March to December 2017). This puts the Switch 2 forecast roughly on par with its predecessor. In the first four quarters following its launch on 19 November 2020, Sony's PlayStation 5 sold around 13.4 million units in just under ten-and-a-half months, albeit against a backdrop of supply issues in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. PlayStation 4 sales were at a similar level over the same period.
Nintendo Switch 2 was released on 5 June 2025 accompanied by Mario Kart World, Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour and the Nintendo Switch 2 editions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The 3D platforming game Donkey Kong Bananza will make its debut on Nintendo Switch 2 on 17 July.
Yesterday, Nintendo also announced the Splatoon spin-off, Splatoon Raiders, for Nintendo Switch 2. A free update for Splatoon 3 on Switch and Switch 2 consoles will be released on 12 June. Following the update, Splatsville and the Grand Festival grounds, among other locations, will appear more detailed and smoother on the Switch 2. Additionally, players on both platforms will be able to play together and against each other.
