Netflix Invests in Animated Video Game Adaptations
With the announcement of a Minecraft series and the start date for a Tomb Raider anime, Netflix invested heavily in animated video game adaptations last week. While the production of Minecraft is currently starting at WildBrain, Tomb Raider from Powerhouse is already coming on 10 October 2024.
The US streaming giant Netflix went online last week with two announcements of animated video game adaptations.
Firstly, an animated series about the block-building game Minecraft is to be created in cooperation with developer studio and Microsoft subsidiary Mojang. The series is being produced by studio WildBrain, which was previously responsible for animated series and films such as ‘Sonic Prime’, ‘Ninjago: Dragons Rising’ and ‘Carmen Sandiego’. Apart from the start of production, no further dates or information are yet known.
Netflix is also cooperating with the Tomb Raider developers Crystal Dynamics and their parent company Embracer Group. While Amazon MGM Studios is producing a live-action series about Lara Croft, Netflix revealed the release date for the animated series ‘Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft’ yesterday, Sunday. The anime series produced by Powerhouse Animation Studios is set to go online exclusively on Netflix on 10 October. It is also already known that Hayley Atwell will be voicing the protagonist Lara Croft.
