Mobile Games Revenue Breaks the €3 Billion Mark in Germany in 2024
Sales revenue generated by mobile games has exceeded €3 billion for the first time in Germany, marking a 63% increase since 2019. According to game - the German Games Industry Association, 24.3 million Germans play mobile games.
In 2024, the popularity of playing video games on smartphones and tablets reached new heights in Germany. Mobile games generated sales revenue of over €3 billion for the first time, up from around €2.9 billion in 2023. Since 2019, mobile games revenue has grown by 63 per cent in Germany. These figures were released by game - the German Games Industry Association, and are based on data collected by the market research company data.ai.
In-app purchases account for almost all the revenue, accounting for 98% of sales. Around €57 million was generated through online gaming services (Apple Arcade and Google Play Pass). By contrast, individual game app purchases generated only €4 million in revenue in 2024. This represents a sharp decline of 69 per cent since 2019, which can be attributed to the growing popularity of free-to-play mobile games.
"Through their accessibility and variety, games for the smartphone and tablet inspire millions of people to play video games - young and old, men and women. This has not only resulted in a strong increase in revenue with mobile games in just a few years but also made the smartphone the most used gaming platform," says Felix Falk, Managing Director of game - The German Games Industry Association.
The number of people playing mobile games in Germany has fallen by 300,000 to a total of 24.3 million. The smartphone has been the most popular gaming platform in Germany for years. On average, smartphone and tablet gamers are 39.2 years old, which is close to the average age of 39.5 years for all video game players in the country. Mobile games are popular with people of all ages: while 10- to 19-year-olds make up the largest proportion of game app users (22%), around one in seven mobile gamers (15%) are over 60 years old. The majority of mobile gamers (53%) are female, while 47% are male.
After reaching all-time highs in recent years, the German gaming market saw a decline in growth in 2024. Last year, sales revenue from games, gaming hardware and online gaming services totalled €9.4 billion, a decline of 6%. The downturn was particularly evident in purchases of games for PCs, consoles, and smartphones, as well as in hardware purchases. However, revenue from online gaming services went against the overall market trend.
