The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Spielwissenschaft (DGSW, German Society for Game Studies) who has formed in June last year is now able to accept members, the founders shared on LinkedIn yesterday.

Membership prices are relatively steep, especially for researchers without current university affiliation: While an academic membership runs 100€ a year, a free membership costs double. For students, a heavily reduced membership fee of 12€ is offered.

Stated aim of the DGSW is establishing Game Studies as its own discipline at universities. Currently, there are only a few Game Studies chairs in the German-speaking area, and many of them are intertwined with Game Design or lean more heavily in that direction.

The DGSW is one of two game studies societies in the German-speaking area. It has been established last year as a group of established professors, lecturers and chairs in the Game Studies space. The Arbeitskreis Geisteswissenschaften und Digitale Spiele (AKGWDS; Working Group on the Humanities and Digital Games) on the other hand, which last year celebrated ten-years of existence in the same year it established itself as a society as well, has started more as a collection of lecturers and students.
