In its search for young professionals, Deutsche Bahn (DB) is turning to gaming and esports to attract young talent. The company aims to recruit around 20,000 new employees in operational roles this year, including over 5,000 young professionals.

The DB Esports Scholarship is the centrepiece of the company's gaming strategy. DB has been awarding this scholarship annually in cooperation with the esports player foundation (EPF) since 2022. It is aimed at young professionals at DB InfraGO AG. The skills acquired in esports are particularly beneficial for those working in areas such as train traffic control, track construction, electrical engineering and mechatronics. Since the initiative was launched, DB has supported 42 scholarship holders and received around 1,500 applications via its gaming-related channels.

Heinz Siegmund, Chief Human Resources Officer at DB InfraGO AG, said: "At DB Gaming, we combine passion with prospects, because we're looking for people who demonstrate team spirit, strategy and perseverance. Esports trains skills such as technical understanding, stress resistance, multitasking, and precise communication. These are precisely the strengths we are looking for in our employees. This makes gamers perfect for our technical and operational roles!"

Julius Althoff, Managing Director of the esports player foundation, said: "Gaming and esports are not only part of youth culture, but also open up a wide range of career opportunities. With the DB Esports Scholarship, DB continues to set unique international standards in the promotion of esports athletes. Several talented individuals have now made the leap into the highest national leagues and are completing their training at DB at the same time. Expanding this commitment to the gaming community demonstrates our commitment to supporting young people in a credible and forward-looking way."
