Daemon X Machina Titanic Scion
With Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion, Marvelous' mecha action franchise jumps onto all current platforms and attempts to make its spectacular battles more dynamic and accessible.
Created and produced by Kenichiro Tsukuda and featuring mechanical designs by Shoji Kawamori, Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion is the sequel to Daemon X Machina, which was released on the Nintendo Switch in 2019 and on PC in 2020. The franchise is therefore celebrating its premiere on the latest consoles from Microsoft and Sony. The game is a fast-paced mecha action game. Players fly into battle in their customised Arsenal (basically a small mech or exosuit like Iron Man) and can freely explore the open world on land or in the air. After taking down enemies, players can collect weapons and equipment, upgrade their skills, and customise their machine to suit their play style. Players can also face boss battles alone or with up to two other players online, although the co-op mode reportedly still has some issues.
Compared to its predecessor, the game places a greater emphasis on narrative, with story sequences presented in a cinematic style. Essentially, the player fights alongside the resistance group Reclaimer against the Axiom military regime and organic-mechanical creatures. Here, the game is more sophisticated than its predecessor, whose story was more convoluted. This also makes the title more accessible and interesting to a wider audience. But despite the improved presentation, however, the game is not played for its story. Instead, the battles involving the combat machines and the way they are controlled are outstanding. They are more dynamic and fast-paced, especially in the big boss battles, and offer greater variety. Compared to Armored Core VI, these battles feature faster-paced action as well as the ability to chain active and passive abilities together. From Software's game is often slower and more tactical, with better mission variety and more impressive larger venues.
Titanic Scion offers a wide range of equipment options, including ranged and melee weapons. The game allows for a high degree of customisation of armour pieces and weapons, with new elements that can be crafted or salvaged. The Hangar is the game's main hub, where players can customise their avatars and create their Arsenal. Exploring the "open world" is also rewarding, as you can obtain new tasks and equipment there. In terms of its open-world design, however, the game cannot compete with current titles. It seems somewhat empty and outdated in places, yet it is still an enhancement on its predecessor. "Explore an alien planet in an arsenal as players battle against mechanical and organic enemies. Trek through the vast open world on foot, fly through the skies, or when all else fails, gallop on horseback across plains, swamps, mountains, and more," writes the publisher, illustrating the variety of the world and the traversal options in the game. However, the mission design could have benefited from a little more variety, as many missions follow a similar structure and resource gathering can sometimes feel slow.
Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion is developed by Marvelous First Studio, a subsidiary of Marvelous Inc., and published in Europe by Marvelous Europe. Marvelous Inc. publishes the title in Asia, while Marvelous USA publishes it in the Americas. However, according to reports, the game appears to have performance issues on the Switch 2.
